“I think it starts with Mitch.”
Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward has launched a new podcast and is using his show to talk about live, football and of course his team.
On “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward” the defensive tackle talked about the upcoming battle for the starting quarterback job, something that hasn’t been a question for 18 season.
Heyward believes right now, it’s Trubisky’s job to lose
“I think the thing that we have to remember about Mitch is he’s coming from a situation where, in Chicago, they didn’t really give him anything and he still made it to the playoffs,” said Heyward.
While he believes it is Trubisky’s job as of now, Training Camp in Latrobe will be the true test.
“We don’t know what it’s gonna be by the time the season kicks off, there’s a lot of football that gotta to take place,” said Heyward pointing out that OTAs and minicamp was just football in shorts.
“I’m ready to put on some pads and see how these guys deal with pressure in their face, the O-lineman is literally folded up in front of them, DBs are really able to press, these are all different things that need to come into play,” added Heyward.
If it is Kenny Pickett who wins the job, Heyward is also confident in him, even with his alleged small hands.
Heyward has been giving Pickett a hard time about his hands, but admits, “he has average size hands.”
“I think it got blown out of proportion and then I just kinda ran with it, why can’t I call my rookie ‘Burger King hands’, he will be on the show later on and I will be giving him a hard time then,” said Heyward.
But Heyward says there’s a reason he was a Heisman Trophy finalist and led the Pitt Panthers to an ACC Championship.
“I didn’t’ think anything of it, he’s able to throw the ball, still able to whip it around and he’s got the ball in his hands for a reason, he was able to do it in college,” said Heyward.
Heyward also had some love for Mason Rudolph, saying the QB and Trubisky are going to make it hard on Pickett to get the starting job and that his "small hands" are the least of his worries.
