The Jacksonville Jaguars had an eventful day on Thursday, when they named a new head coach -- but not the one many were expecting or perhaps hoping for.
The Jaguars tapped former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson to take over after the disastrous, short-lived Urban Meyer era, only hours after it was reported that Buccaneers offensive coordinator and former Jags QB Byron Leftwich had taken himself out of the running.
The developments turned heads on social media, where it appeared that Leftwich was the sentimental favorite to lead the organization that once drafted him seventh overall.
Of course, against the backdrop of Brian Flores' bombshell racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, some fans and journalists didn't seem particularly enthused about the optics of yet another well-qualified Black assistant apparently being the second choice to a white candidate getting a second chance.
Others pointed to Pederson's Super Bowl ring, and said he deserved another opportunity after being pushed out of Philly in an apparent power struggle.
Here's what they were saying on Football Twitter:
Would Doug Pederson be a good coach? I don't know, maybe. Probably.

Do I think Byron Leftwich has the potential to change this franchise in ways Pederson couldn't? Absolutely, 150% yes.
Would Byron change the franchise? I wish we'd get the chance to find out.
Clown ass Jacksonville doesn’t deserve Doug Pederson. https://t.co/juv5BdF9iN
