One of the big questions still remaining for Aaron Rodgers, now that he is officially a Jet, is how long he intends to play for New York.
There is two years left on Rodgers’ deal, but he could retire at the end of the upcoming season, as there was a point this offseason when he was leaning towards calling it a career. When asked about his intentions for 2024, Rodgers said he isn’t looking that far ahead just yet.
“Right now, I’m just gonna focus on this season,” Rodgers said. “I’m excited about being here and expect to be here for the duration of the offseason, and I’m excited to get to know my new teammates and the coaching staff and the organization.
“I’m excited about diving in and being a part of this group and getting to know some of the names of my teammates, and I’m excited to be working with all you guys. I heard a lot about the New York media, so I’m excited to see what you guys are all about.”
The Jets reportedly had some pause in negotiations with the Packers, wanting protection in the event that Rodgers did retire after one season in New York. But owner Woody Johnson told reporters on Wednesday that there was no hesitation to make the deal despite not having confirmation that Rodgers would play two seasons, and while Rodgers hasn’t committed to a second season, he is all in for 2023.
“Again, I’m an older player,” Rodgers said. “So there’s a lot more than just the playing part. There’s the body part that comes into play. The reason I take care of myself is to allow me to continue to play into my 40s. I always dreamt about being a starter at 40, and I’ll turn 40 in December of this year.
“I’m gonna be here for the forseeable future…I want to get to know the guys and be around the facility.”
