Kevin Youkilis is more plugged in than the rest of us on Tom Brady’s plans.

But he apparently doesn’t hear things as far out in advance as you might imagine.

Youkilis is in the Brady inner circle, as he’s married to Julie Brady, the quarterback’s sister. He knows Tom Brady well enough that he will get a heads up on certain items of news, but when the future Hall of Famer decided to end his brief retirement, Youkilis only got about 15 minutes notice.

He told the story on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” of when he learned Brady was coming back.

“I got a message on a chain, and then like 15 minutes later I was at somebody’s house and I’m trying to keep it quiet – don’t tell anybody, right? Because I don’t know when the news is coming out," Youkilis said Tuesday. "And it was instantaneous news, somebody was like 'Hey, your brother-in-law is coming back.' And I’m like, 'Oh here it comes.' And then all of a sudden here come all the text messages and here comes all the stuff of 'Hey, did you know?' It’s pretty funny what you get."

Youkilis had a successful baseball career, and is easily recognized when in Boston. But some don’t know his connection to the Brady family, which can create the occasional awkward moment.

“The best is when people don’t know and they start talking smack and they start saying something they shouldn’t,” Youkilis said. “And then if my wife is around I’m like 'Uh oh, hey listen, I’m going to tell you something right now, you better not say anything because you’re going to regret it.'"

The other benefit for Youkilis is that when he’s around Brady, people don’t care about him quite as much.

Such as when he’s at a graduation with the greatest football and hockey player ever.

“The funniest story was when my niece graduated, Wayne Gretzky’s son graduated and our niece graduated (at the same time) at the high school,” Youkilis said. “It was Wayne Gretzky and then Tom Brady behind him and then I was behind them. And nobody cared that I was there and it was great, it was so good.”
