The Mets may just be getting started.
After rocking the baseball world on Thursday with a blockbuster trade to acquire Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco from Cleveland, team president Sandy Alderson suggested there was more to come while on a Zoom call with reporters following the trade.
“We’re always hungry,” Alderson said when asked if the Mets could add another big contract.
“I think that’s something we will address in the aftermath of this,” he added. “Obviously we’ve been thinking about what this move, what impact this has on other things that [we] might consider and what we want to do. I think when the dust settles here in the next couple days we’ll have a better idea of that. I think this deal will have some impact in the marketplace generally, we’ll see what it is.”
The Mets have been expected to be major spenders this offseason after the Wilpons sold the team to billionaire Steve Cohen, but up until Thursday had only signed catcher James McCann and other small deals, like reliever Trevor May.
Free agent outfielder George Springer has reportedly been high on the Mets’ target list, but would likely come at a high cost. Same goes for free agent pitcher Trevor Bauer or even DJ LeMahieu.
The trade for Lindor will also raise questions about when or if they can extend the All-Star shortstop, but Alderson added that the $210 million competitive balance tax is a “significant demarcation,” but not necessarily a line they cannot cross.
The MLB free agent market has moved at a snail’s pace this winter, with nearly all of the top free agents still unsigned.
Perhaps the Lindor trade will be the fuse to get the market going, one in which the Mets will surely be active.
