The New York Mets weren't able to land George Springer, so it looks as though they're set on adding more pieces to their outfield.
Days after adding former Cubs outfielder Albert Almora, the Mets were reportedly in serious talks with another centerfielder, according to RADIO.COM Sports MLB insider Jon Heyman.
Minutes later, Andy Martino of SNY reported that the two sides had agreed to a deal pending a physical.
Pillar has moved around in recent seasons, playing for both the Blue Jays and Giants in 2019 and both the Red Sox and Rockies in the shortened 60-game 2020 season. 2019 was arguably his best year as a pro, collecting 158 hits, clubbing 21 home runs, driving in 88 runs and scoring 83 runs. His slash line finished at .259/.287/.432 — nothing spectacular, but respectable. In fact, he was respected enough around the senior circuit to gain an MVP vote... or, at least he was respected enough around the San Francisco region, causing his sole voter to do a little bit of explaining.
In a small sample size the following season, Pillar was even better, slashing .288/.336/.462. Prior to his short stints with the Giants, Red Sox and Rockies, Pillar had spent his whole MLB career with the Blue Jays from 2013 to 2019, developing a penchant for flashy plays in the outfield.
He ranked just outside MLB Trade Rumors' Top 50 Free Agents list, labeled as an honorable mention.
