Atlanta Braves ace Mike Soroka was dealt yet another blow to his 2021 season.
The right-hander is expected to undergo exploratory surgery on his Achilles, which he had torn last season, after experiencing discomfort while walking, manager Brian Snitker informed the media on Wednesday.
Soroka had an MRI after feeling the discomfort, which led to the decision. He will undergo the surgery next week in Green Bay with the same specialist who did the original surgery on Soroka’s Achilles last year.
There is no timetable on when Soroka will be able to recover and return, but the outlook of him pitching in 2021 does not appear to be promising.
The 23-year-old, who was runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year in 2019, tore his Achilles when attempting to field a ground ball against the Mets on Aug. 3 of last year.
Soroka was actually healthy enough to pitch in spring training but was shut down before the start of the season due to shoulder inflammation.
He was cleared to resume baseball activities on April 29, but it will now be a while before he can do that again.
The Braves have certainly missed Soroka, who has the capability to be the ace of their staff. The team is 24th in the league with a 4.55 ERA and only Ian Anderson and Huascar Ynoa have ERAs under 4.00 in the starting rotation.
