(670 The Score) In the wake of Yahoo Sports writer Charles Robinson publishing a piece in which seven NFL general managers all agreed the Bears should trade quarterback Justin Fields this offseason and select his replacement at the top of the NFL Draft, Tribune writer Brad Biggs shared that he has heard the same sentiment in his many discussions with talent evaluators around the league.
While many in Chicago view the Bears’ looming decision on Fields’ future as a difficult one, outside talent evaluators don’t share the same perspective, Biggs said. They believe it’s a rather straightforward call – trade Fields.
“I don’t think Justin will be on the team next year – certainly if a decision was being made to this point with the body of work,” Biggs said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Friday morning. “Who the quarterback is that they take, there’s a lot of heavy lifting to do between now and April 25. But Caleb (Williams) is going to dominate a lot of that discussion for the team, I would imagine.
“The thing that sort of surprises me is the folks who think they should keep Fields or that they will keep Fields, the thing that I think those people are failing to understand is when you talk to people around the league who survey the landscape, who see what’s going on, who know how it works, I don’t think it’s a difficult decision … If it was based off what’s happened to this point, it’s not something that’s going to require a long time at Halas Hall to figure out which way they’re going to want to go. It’s not a close decision in my mind.”
The 24-year-old Fields has thrown for 1,810 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in nine games this season. He has also rushed for 458 yards and two touchdowns. His 91.8 passer rating ranks 16th in the NFL. Fields is in his third NFL season, and a decision on the fifth-year option on his contract must be made this offseason.
The Bears are currently in line to hold the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft because they own the NFL-worst Panthers' first-round selection.
