The "Tyrese Maxey Game" against the Denver Nuggets was a fun spectacle to watch unfold, but the Philadelphia 76ers don't seem content with their current bench back court situation with a fairly secure postseason berth ahead of them.
For that reason, despite some great yet inconsistent performances from Maxey and Shake Milton, Daryl Morey is reportedly looking for another guard, according to reporter Jason Dumas.
Delon Wright is enjoying a career-best campaign in a do-it-all role with the Pistons, averaging 10.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.9 steals as a starting guard. He's affordable, but not cheap — he is owed a little over $17.5 million until his impending 2022 free agency — and could immediately become a viable option to back up or play alongside Ben Simmons. Pistons writer James L. Edwards opined that Detroit could look to move Wright, though they're thin at point guard. However, he thinks they would "seriously (consider)" any calls for him given their desire to stockpile assets for the future.
George Hill is more of a veteran option, here, as he is six years older than Wright at 34. A starter throughout the 2010s, turned role player, turned back into starter with a less-than-stellar 2021 Oklahoma City Thunder team, Hill is a stronger three-point shooter than Wright and a more experienced presence. He's been in the playoffs in 11 of his 12 years in a meaningful capacity, averaging 32 minutes per game in 127 postseason contests. On the year, Hill is averaging 9.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists, and is set to make a little bit more than Wright with just over $19.5 million remaining on his contract until it, like Wright's, expires prior to 2022.
The Sixers' current backup options to run the offense, as previously mentioned, are Shake Milton and Tyrese Maxey, and both have fluctuated in terms of their production throughout the year.
Milton started out looking like a surefire Sixth Man of the Year candidate, averaging 16.8 points on .496/.353/.868 shooting through his first 12 games. In the ten games since then, he's averaging 10.6 points on .390/.190/.889 marks.
Maxey, on the other hand, saw a golden opportunity to shine given COVID and injury issues, and he did all he could. However, he has not yet proven his ability to run an offense in the second unit and likely needs more time to develop, a process which a veteran guard could additionally help expedite.
Head coach Doc Rivers recently said that Maxey is right on the brink of making the rotation, though a deal for a veteran guard would get in the way of that.
