There are almost too many amazing calls in the career of Marv Albert for me to choose one that sits above the rest. But for what it's worth, this one came to mind almost immediately upon hearing the news that his career may be coming to an end shortly.
That's right — after over five decades of calling basketball games, Albert is finally conceding that the end of the road may be near.
“I’m winding down,” the 79-year-old Albert told The New York Post (via Andrew Marchand). “I’m not sure when. I think that is certainly ahead. I don’t want to be dishonest about it. The day will come.”
Albert has been calling games for Turner with Chris Webber throughout the 2020-21 season, though he has been recording remotely from a New York studio. Marchand notes that Chris Webber and the production team for the broadcasts are working out of Atlanta, which sometimes leads to faulty communication during the broadcasts.
However, if there is an All-Star Game — which is currently the plan — Marchand says that Albert will head to the arena and call the game on site. Which reminds me...
Maybe this montage has my favorite Marv Albert moments, though Kenny Smith's contributions are hard to beat.
