For Alex Smith, the long road back to the NFL took 693 days, but he made it.
After Kyle Allen took a rough helmet-to-helmet hit from Jalen Ramsey late in the 2nd quarter, Smith made his return to the field after missing almost two years due to a gruesome leg injury.
Smith’s family was on hand to see him return to the field.
And the veteran’s first pass attempt was a completion:
In his first two drives, Smith completed five of six attempts for 35 yards and engineered a field goal before the half.
In a scary moment for fans, Aaron Donald sacked Smith to end his first drive. Smith was unurt on the play, but everyone around the NFL held their breath.
Smith was active for the first time Sunday after Washington benched Dwayne Haskins this week and head coach Ron Rivera said he had no issue playing the veteran QB. (Haskins was not in the building Sunday against the Rams because he was sick.)
