It’s only the second day of Training Camp in Latrobe for the Steelers but the question is already being asked, is wide receiver George Pickens going to be a problem this year?
On Thursday, Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo told the PM Team that things got pretty heated between Pickens and new receivers coach Zach Azzanni on the sidelines.
Fittipaldo says it happened on the second-to-last play of practice.
“I’ve never seen George Pickens coached like that before,” said Fittipaldo. “That got me to questioning, has George Pickens ever been coached hard and how is he going to react to that.”
Fittipaldo added that Pickens wasn’t happy “for quite some time” after the incident.
On Friday, The Athletic and 93.7 The Fan’s Steelers insider Mark Kaboly said, “Third down situation, Pickens run a slant off a pick and is open across middle. Fields goes to Austin outside and misses throw. Pickens not thrilled with decision jumps up and down in disgust.”
Chris Mueller believes that it won’t be a huge issue for the Steelers. Pickens will produce when he needs to in 2024.
Mueller also believes that there are too many skilled players in college football at wide receiver and after his rookie contract is up, Pickens will be gone . . . unless he just puts up monster numbers.
It’s also concerning that Pickens blew up on the first day of camp, when everyone is pretty much fresh and ready to go.
In a one-on-one interview with CBS Sports, Pickens said he thinks the wide receivers room is good and doesn't need to add a big name.
