The 5-11 product that the Detroit Lions put on the field in 2020 was enough to push some fans in the direction of alcohol. For your troubles, kicker Matt Prater earned you a free drink.
At the outset of the season, Prater made a bet with Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManus that his season-long field goal would top that of McManus. Bud Light turned it into a promotion, saying that the city of whichever kicker made the longer field goal would be gifted free beer.
As it turns out, the 59-yard game-winner that Prater hit to win the team's Week 10 game against The Washington Football Team was the longest that either kicker hit this season. That means that on a to-be-announced date, participating bars in Detroit will be stocked with Bud Light, and those in attendance that day won't have to pay for the first one. Presumably, such a promotion will take place after a good percentage of the population has received the COVID-19 vaccine, though that's just a guess.
Prater took to Twitter after the game to celebrate, one of the only bright spots in an otherwise disastrous season:
Though Vic Fangio's decision to have McManus attempt a 70-yard field goal in Denver's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders caught some off guard, perhaps he was onto something. Unfortunately for Broncos fans, that attempt was blocked.
