It should go without saying that the Super Bowl should always be viewed as a contest in which either team can come out on top. After all, it’s the best of the best.
But taking a look at the history of Super Bowl point spreads indicates that this one is projected to be especially close. Only five Super Bowls have had point spreads of +/- two points, including last year’s clash between the Patriots and the Rams. Interestingly enough, two of these five games have resulted in double-digit point differentials.
Super Bowl XVIII, played between the Redskins and the Raiders, ended in a 29-point victory for the then-Los Angeles Raiders despite the point spread separating the teams by just two points. Last year’s game also held a point spread of just two points, but the Patriots dominant defense allowed Tom Brady to earn his sixth ring by a 10-point margin.
Super Bowl LIV, featuring the 49ers and the Chiefs, has the third-closest point spread of all time, making it extremely difficult to bet. Sportsbooks have seen the spread oscillate between 1 and 1.5, but betting against the spread and on the money line seem to be equally intriguing cases this year.
It only seems right, then, that the final round of expert picks of the season should fall on such a momentous and unpredictable game.
