We can finally put the “Madden Curse” to bed once and for all.
Patrick Mahomes graced the cover of the popular EA Sports video game for the 2019 season, which has garnered a reputation for serving as some sort of curse for the player to be featured on it.
Past players have succumbed to injuries or poor performances, happening enough times where fans began to notice a pattern of the players featured on Madden — they were cursed.
Mahomes appeared to be victim of such a curse earlier this season when he was carried off the field in October after dislocating his knee on a QB sneak.
Somehow, Mahomes missed just three games due to the injury, and returned to lead the Chiefs all the way to a Super Bowl victory on Sunday night with an MVP performance.
While some players have arguably beaten the curse in the past, Mahomes became the first player on the cover to actually win the Super Bowl the same season, leaving no room for debate — the curse is dead.
EA Sports even had some fun with it, posting a graphic on Twitter of Mahomes with the words “WHAT CURSE?” behind the Super Bowl MVP.
Mahomes finished the game with 286 yards, two passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown and two interceptions.
Not only did Mahomes break the Madden Curse, but he also ended a 50-year Super Bowl drought for the Kansas City Chiefs franchise, who last won the Lombardi Trophy in 1970 in Super Bowl IV.
At 23, he became the youngest quarterback to ever win the Super Bowl. With such a long career ahead of him, there is no telling what other obstacles Mahomes will take down in the future.
