One game. Eight figures.
According to Caesar’s senior oddsmaker Alan Berg, who appeared on “Home and Home” Tuesday morning, hundreds of millions of dollars are expected to be placed on bets for this year’s Super Bowl, adding another record-breaking figure to the already impressive list of new highs. Ticket prices have reached astonishing levels. The amount of money that companies are spending on commercials, be it for a movie, a product or a political campaign, is through the roof. And the amount of working people that stay home on Monday to enjoy the “holiday” may leave a record-breaking number of companies desperate for assistance.
But for now, we’re focusing on some of the most fun bets that sportsbooks offer for the big game: PROPS! With the help of our panel of “You Better Our Bet” hosts, we’ll go through some of the best football-based bets in addition to some of those classic Super Bowl novelty props.
Be sure to check out a “You Better You Bet” original prop published in Caesar’s Sportsbook!
Best Bets
Will either team score in the first five minutes?
Yes (+160)
No (-180)
Ken Barkley, Co-Host of “You Better You Bet”: Yes
“I’m surprised that “Yes” is that big of a price given what the total is. That’s a little surprising to me. When you first stated the prop, I was going to be contrarian and take “No.” But now I look at it, and at +160? Yes, absolutely yes!”
Jimmy Garoppolo: Total Passing Yards (240.5)
Over (-112)
Under (-112)
Nick Kostos, Co-Host of “You Better You Bet”: Over
“I’m going to take the over and I’m going to wait until Sunday to do it. I think the Niners are going to be able to score in this game and it’s not going to be like the Bob Griese-style performances that we’ve seen the first two weeks. This is not going to be a game where Garoppolo throws only eight times, like that is just not going to happen. I think Garoppolo goes over it comfortably, I think he has one of the best games of his career, I think he goes over 300 yards!”
Patrick Mahomes: Total Passing Yards (300.5)
Over (-118)
Under (-108)
Nick Kostos: Under
“I feel like I’m going to end up betting Mahomes’ yards under on game day. That number is just going to go up and up and up and up and I’ll take a piece of that under come Super Bowl Sunday.”
Ken Barkley: Avoid
“To me it’s more about opportunity. Either they’re successful and they’re driven by him, in which case his statistics are good. Or, if they get smoked, he still attempts a lot of passes. So yards might come in no matter what. If you love the Niners, it’s not correlated to Mahomes going under. There’s a way that they get smoked and he still throws for 400 yards. So quarterback yards I’m always a little bit iffy on.”
Raheem Mostert: Total Rushing Yards (77.5)
Over (-102)
Under (-124)
Joe Ostrowski, Co-Host of “You Better You Bet”: Under
“I think that’s just way too high and you know what the Chiefs are preparing to stop over these past couple of weeks. I have questions about their defense, but yes, their rush defense improved throughout the year. You know the Chiefs are expecting them to go to Mostert over that monster game in the NFC title game. I think you have to play the under but you might want to wait until the end of the week when all of the public has checked in.”
Anthony Stalter, “You Better You Bet” Guest: Under
“I think Mostert goes under his attempts, I think it’s 10-12 carries. I think he gets probably around two or three catches, though, so I’m taking the over of 1.5 on his receptions and maybe on the yardage as well.”
Emmanuel Sanders: Total Receiving Yards (44.5)
Over (-130)
Under (EVEN)
Nick Kostos: Over
“With that experience - he’s won a championship already - I think they may lean on him here. I think there’s a case to be made. I wouldn’t be mad or upset at anyone who put both Sanders and (Deebo) Samuel to go over. I like the 49ers passing game as a whole, honestly.”
Sammy Watkins: Total Receiving Yards (49.5)
Over (-120)
Under (-110)
Brett Kollmann, “You Better You Bet” Guest: Over
“That’s one catch. That’s all I’ve got to say. That’s Patrick Mahomes squirting out to the right, Tyreek bracketed down the field, Travis Kelce has Fred Warner all over him, Sammy’s sitting there on the backside just standing still because nobody is paying attention. Mahomes throws it 40 yards down the field, wide open, just like that. One catch. If you’re betting 20 bucks on one catch that’s not a bad idea!”
George Kittle: Total Receiving Yards (70.5)
Over (-145)
Under (+110)
Brett Kollmann: Over
“I think Kittle leads both teams in receiving yardage, mainly because the Chiefs don’t really have anybody that can match up with him. When they go into two high coverages, most of the time Tyrann Mathieu is going to be deep, and he’s their best slot defender. This means you’re Daniel Sorenson down covering George Kittle 1-on-1 which is just not going to work. Even if you put Matheiu in the slot against Kittle, you can kind of motion him inside, but Deebo Samuel in the slot, and put one of those Chiefs’ linebackers on Kittle, and none of them can match up with him either!”
Anthony Stalter: Over
“If I am going to lay money on one player going off, it is George Kittle. Kansas City’s defense has done okay against tight ends but I was looking at a lot of the fantasy projections which really help when it comes to props. Kansas City, according to our site (4for4.com), ranks 27th against tight ends this year. That’s the one matchup I’m looking to exploit if I’m looking at prop odds. That’s receptions, that’s receiving yards, maybe even throw in a touchdown prop, and I like the over on all of them.”
First Player To Score A TD
Nick Kostos: Kyle Juszczyk (+4000)
“I think it would be some kind of, like, get Juszczyk in space against the linebacker. Kyle’s got two weeks to prepare, he’s gonna have some s*** cooked up, and Juszczyk is a matchup nightmare at the fullback position... we’ve seen that over the course of the season. I think that’s something he could look to do early in the game: get him out in space against the linebacker out in space that can’t cover him and get the touchdown not on the ground but through the air.”
Novelty Props
Coin Toss
Heads (-103)
Tails (-103)
Danny Parkins, Co-Host of “You Better You Bet”: Avoid
“If I can give a PSA to all the first-time gamblers out there: I will bet on anything in the Super Bowl. You can bet on everything from how many planes will be in the flyover before the game, the length of the National Anthem, the color of the Gatorade bath, to what hairstyle J-Lo will have. And I will bet on everything, but the one thing I won’t bet on… is the coin toss. Let me tell you why. It’s not that I won’t bet on the coin toss at all, but you have to bet on the coin toss with someone at the Super Bowl party, be it your wife or your buddy that you’re watching the game with, because you can give yourself even money. If you go to some of these websites, they want you to lay 15 cents on the dollar on a 50-50 proposition! It’s an outrage and it’s highway robbery!”
Additionally, the oddsmakers at BetOnline.ag have created some incredibly obscure novelty bets that are probably wiser to view for entertainment purposes than for serious betting reasons. That said, some of the RADIO.COM Sports team still weighed in with their thoughts on these outlandish props.
Which will be higher?
Yardage of the longest reception (-220)
President Trump’s approval rating on February 3 (+155)
Dave Briggs, Co-Host of “Home and Home
“49ers DC Robert Saleh equated the Chiefs receiving core to an Olympic track team and he’s right. Tyreek Hill & Mecole Hardman are arguably the two fastest players in the game and Tyreek says Sammy Watkins is even faster! Combine that with President Trump’s relatively immovable approval rating in the mid to upper 40s and this is a steal. This game will have two (not just one) touchdowns greater than 45-plus yards and higher than the POTUS approval on Super Bowl Sunday.”
Will Darelle Revis tweet about Richard Sherman during the game?
Yes (+200)
No (-300)
Nick Kostos
“Well, Joe, that depends if you think Sherman is going to get burned.”
Joe Ostrowski
“Yes. Yes he will.”
