Unlike some of the losses the Eagles have sustained during the 2020 season, their Week 5 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers -- and more specifically at the hands of Chase Claypool -- had some bright spots.
The shiniest of those bright spots was undoubtedly Travis Fulgham, who became a hero in Philadelphia after his Week 4 performance and fourth-quarter touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers. However, his Week 5 production blew his Week 4 stat line -- two catches for 57 yards and a touchdown -- completely out of the water.
Fulgham hauled in 10 catches on 13 targets for 152 yards and a touchdown, torching the Steelers top-ranked defense on multiple occasions and proving to be Carson Wentz's most effective target.
94WIP's own Glen Macnow made a keen observation as Fulgham was getting going in the first half, comparing the undrafted Old Dominion product to another Eagle who had much higher draft value.
And had JJ Arcega-Whiteside not caught a pass for 37 yards -- and celebrated afterward, despite it ultimately meaning nothing -- giving him 11 receptions in his career, Macnow would be correct.
However, comparing Fulgham's Week 5 performance with Arcega-Whiteside's 2019 season makes for an eyebrow-raising group of statistics:
Fulgham (Week 5): 1 game, 10 receptions, 152 yards, 1 touchdown
Arcega-Whiteside (2019): 16 games, 10 receptions, 169 yards, 1 touchdown
But rather than hate on Arcega-Whiteside, let's look at another comparison being made that inspires some real optimism as to what Fulgham can offer.
Should we jump to any conclusions? No. But does Fulgham seem like the real deal already? Absolutely. For someone who was waived by the Lions prior to the 2020 season, waived by the Packers nine days after they picked him up, and signed by the Eagles just weeks ago, it's an incredible story.
