"To the world you are a mother, but to me you are the absolute world."
That's the way Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick DeVonta Smith captioned a video sharing a moment that may or may not induce some crying. No one's cutting onions around here, I assure you. It's just the natural response to watching a son purchase a house for his biggest fan: Mom.
On Thursday morning, Smith uploaded a short video to his Instagram, showing his beautiful mother entering her beautiful new home, with "Smile Mama, Smile" by Rick Ross and CeeLo Green appropriately playing in the background. Though he said that he was just planning to put most of his rookie contract — a four-year, $20.1 million fully guaranteed deal — in the bank, it looks like he ultimately decided to put a portion of the money to good use.
Several former and current teammates, including fellow Eagles wideout Jalen Reagor ("HELL YEAH BRO!") and Alabama alumni Patrick Surtain II ("That’s Real Brotha 💯") and Jaylen Waddle ("Blessed 🖤 "), shared their approval and enthusiasm for their friend in the comments of the post.
In a way, Smith is returning the favor for years and years of support. Both his mother and father were completely overjoyed for his Heisman Trophy win.
We have to expect that they'll be there every step of the way throughout what should be a very fruitful NFL career in the City of Brotherly (and Motherly) love.
