Odell Beckham, who, it should be noted has no journalism qualifications beyond playing in the NFL, broke what would have been the revelation of the century … if it had been true.

For reasons that remain a mystery, Beckham decided it would be a good idea to leak to his 4.2 million Twitter followers that Deebo Samuel had just been traded to the New England Patriots. That myth was quickly debunked with Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and others chiming in to refute Beckham’s ludicrous clickbait.

This isn’t the first time Beckham, in his infinite trolling, has let on that he knows more than we do about Samuel, alluding as much earlier this week.

Though completely unfounded with no basis in reality whatsoever, Beckham’s fabrication was just believable enough to spread like wildfire on Twitter, gaining steam, even as virtually every respected news outlet dismissed it as pure fiction. Samuel is said to want out of San Francisco and the Patriots could certainly use another weapon for Mac Jones. However, as pointed out by Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Patriots have just $200,000 in available cap space, making it impossible for them to acquire anyone, let alone a Pro Bowl receiver expected to command over $20 million annually.

Whether Beckham is bored (that seems to be Deebo's working theory) and looking for attention or was merely fed bad intel, rest assured, nothing he said was even remotely accurate. Instead of spreading false rumors, maybe Beckham should focus on finding a team for next season. The free agent could be sidelined well into the 2022 season after tearing his ACL in Super Bowl LVI.
