COLUMBUS, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) - The Ohio State Buckeyes have made their starting quarterback for the season opener official.
Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day announced Saturday that redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud would start for OSU's Sep. 2 opener against Minnesota.
Stroud, a 19-year-old out of Rancho Cucamonga, California, is projected at 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds. He spent the 2020 season as the primary backup to former Buckeyes star Justin Fields, with the former's appearing in three games for OSU. His best performance came in Ohio State's 52-12 win over Michigan State last December. Stroud did not attempt a pass in his late appearance, but did run for a 48-yard touchdown to cap off the Bucks' blowout.
Stroud had been competing with fellow redshirt freshman Jack Miller and true frosh Kyle McCord for the starting spot. In Ohio State's spring game back in April, Stroud passed for 185 yards and two touchdowns.
