Ohio State receives shakeup to its 2022 Big Ten conference schedule

The Big Ten conference announced some changes to the conference football schedule for the 2022 season, and while the Buckeyes' opponents remain the same, many matchups will be played on different dates than originally planned.

The non-conference kickoff to the 2022 season is unchanged, as Ohio State opens the year against Notre Dame (Sept. 3), followed by Arkansas State (Sept. 10) and Toledo (Sept. 17). All three will be hosted in Columbus, as no locational revisions have been made to the schedule.

Instead of opening their conference schedule with two consecutive games on the road - at Michigan State, and Penn State - Head Coach Ryan Day and company will play host to Wisconsin on Sept. 24 and Rutgers on Oct. 1. Ohio State's battle with the Badgers will mark the first meeting between both sides since the 2020 Big Ten Conference Championship game. The Spartans then become the team's first road matchup on Oct. 8.

The Big Ten proceeded to swap the Buckeyes' home game against Iowa with a bye week, giving them an off day on Oct. 15, and instead playing the Hawkeyes on Oct.22. This will be followed by their anticipated matchup with the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley come Oct. 29. While times for all games have yet to be announced, this one might possess the best odds to be dubbed a night game. This date was originally scheduled for the Buckeyes to host Indiana, who will now travel to Columbus on Nov. 12.

Ohio State's two road matchups versus Northwestern (Nov. 5) and Maryland (Nov. 19) - as well as their season finale against Michigan (Nov. 26) - are the only conference matchups to remain unchanged, with the conference championship slated to fall on the following Saturday, Dec. 3.

The conference also expects changes to schedules of coming seasons - after having previously released their schedules through 2025 - due to the impact of the pandemic on the 2020 season.
