The Ohio State University has parted ways with men's basketball head coach Chris Holtmann following the team's 62-54 loss to No. 20 Wisconsin Tuesday night, per reports. Holtmann, 52, was hired by the university in 2017 and finishes his tenure with a 137-86 record.
Hired away from Butler to replace long-tenured coach Thad Matta, Holtmann had early success at Ohio State, winning Big Ten Coach of the Year in his first season (2017-18) and reaching the NCAA Tournament four of his first five seasons with the university. He amassed a 107-56 record in those five seasons.
His final two seasons, however, saw a significant drop off, finishing 30-30 over the past two seasons and an abysmal 9-24 record in league play in the same span. The team's 16-19 record in 2022-23 was the program's first losing season since 2003-04 under Jim O'Brien.
The Buckeyes will face the no. 2 Purdue Boilermakers in Columbus on February 18th at 1:00 pm.
