It’s been an expensive week for Timberwolves veteran Patrick Beverley, who was fined $55,000 for two separate incidents. First, the 33-year-old was hit with a $25,000 fine for “improper conduct” toward an official, resulting in his ejection Sunday in the Timberwolves’ regular season finale. Later, the NBA fined Beverley $30,000 for using “egregious profanity” in his post-game comments to reporters after leading a fourth-quarter comeback to beat his former team, the Los Angeles Clippers, in Tuesday’s Western Conference play-in game, clinching Minnesota’s first playoff berth in four years.
Thursday, Beverley tweeted out a QR code to his Venmo account, accepting donations from fans to help pay his fine.
It’s not often you see an established star—especially one with career earnings totaling over $65 million—taking to social media to drum up funds. However, Beverley may have been inspired by Ryan Hartman of the Minnesota Wild, whose Venmo exploded with donations from fans offering to pay his $4,250 fine for fighting Oilers forward Evander Kane—and flipping him the bird—in a game earlier this week (one of the donors was Kane’s ex-wife). Thankful for the support, Hartman said all the money collected will be donated to Children’s Minnesota, a non-profit hospital system with locations in St. Paul and Minneapolis.
Beverley chipped in with seven points, three assists and a team-high 11 rebounds in Tuesday night’s victory, helping the T-Wolves erase a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit, much to the delight of part-owner Alex Rodriguez. Commissioner Adam Silver may not have appreciated his course language after the game, though at least Beverley has the support of Bud Light.
Beverley and the Timberwolves travel to Memphis for Game 1 of their opening-round series Saturday at 3:30 PM ET.
