The Steelers had another year without a playoff victory in 2023. Even with that fact, the organization decided to extent their leader, Mike Tomlin, to a three-year extension.
The contract extension means Tomlin will be the Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers through, at least, 2027.
The issue for many Steelers fans and Andrew Fillipponi is the lack of results in the post season.
“He’s getting a big raise and he’s getting more money and more years for being in charge, for being the face of an organization that is barely better than average,” said Fillipponi on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh.
The co-host of the PM Team presented the following:
11 teams have won the Super Bowl since Pittsburgh did in 2008.
The Steelers haven’t won a playoff game in seven seasons.
Among AFC teams, the only teams that have longer playoff win droughts are the Dolphins, the Jets, the Broncos and the Raiders…that’s it.
Poni ponders, why is that deserving of an extension?
He isn’t saying that Mike Tomlin is doing a horrible job, but while he’s 173-100 in the regular season, he’s now 8-10 in the playoffs.
After starting his career 6-2, Tomlin is now 3-8 in his last 11 playoffs games.
“We’ve entered into the Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati portion of his career,” said Fillipponi. Meaning, the Steelers will be middling for years to come with a playoff appearance here and there.
“The Standard is the Standard”, the mantra the Steelers have adopted may need to be changed to “steady as she goes.”
The organization has picked stability over success.
