The Rangers and New York Mets trade involving three-time Cy Young Award Winner Max Scherzer is complete.
The Mets will receive Rangers shortstop prospect Luisangel Acuna in return for the star pitcher. Acuna, the younger brother of Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr., is the Rangers No. 3 rated prospect and the No. 44 rated prospect in all of MLB, according to MLB Pipeline.
Scherzer is owed around $15 million for the rest of the 2023 season and can opt out of the final year of his contract in 2024 worth $43.3 million.
SNY's Andy Martino reports that the Rangers will pay $22.5 million of the remaining money on Scherzer's contract.
The AL West-leading Rangers have sought a frontline starter to add to the rotation ever since their own ace, Jacob deGrom, went down with a season-ending elbow injury in April after just six starts. Scherzer fits the bill.
Scherzer, who just turned 39 this week, has struggled this season, posting a 4.01 ERA in 107 2/3 innings. But he holds a career 3.15 ERA spanning 16 seasons. In addition to winning three Cy Young awards, Scherzer is an eight-time All-Star and helped lead the Nationals to their first World Series championship in 2019.
Scherzer has been just as good in the postseason, pitching to a 3.58 ERA in 27 appearances (22 starts).
