PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers president Art Rooney II spent a lot of time discussing Ben Roethlisberger’s future during his yearly meeting with reporters. He also said it will be a challenging salary cap situation. Believes they have the right man for a new NFL with Matt Canada as offensive coordinator.
While Rooney wouldn’t say he will give head coach Mike Tomlin a contract extension, Rooney said about his future.
“We will address Mike’s contract with him as time goes on in this off-season,” Rooney said. “I feel comfortable in saying he will be our coach into the future.”
Tomlin has never had a losing season in 14 years. He’s 145-78-1 which ties him with Seattle head coach Pete Carroll for 21st in all-time NFL wins and just four behind Bill Cowher.
Rooney believes if he could have the same roster back, he would and like his chances in 2021. He said of how Tomlin did coaching that group.
“In terms of the job he did,” Rooney said. “Obviously we didn’t finish the way we like.”
“Playoff game, hard to analyze what we did there in terms of turning the ball over that way. You aren’t going to win many games. I don’t see how you attribute that to coaching preparation. I think the team went into that game prepared and felt like we were going to win. I wasn’t one of those things were we came out flat or anything like that. Just can’t turn the ball over.”
“We set a franchise record starting out 11-0, won our division. Those are the positives. The way we finished were not one of the positives. I know Mike feels as bad about it as any of us and is determined do what we need to do to fight to get back into having another opportunity to win the division and move on.”
