The New Orleans Saints did not draft a safety over the weekend, but they appear to have set their sights set on one.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Saints are expected to reignite talks with free-agent safety Tyrann Mathieu and “make an aggressive push” to add him to their roster.
Mathieu, 29, surprisingly has remained a free agent despite his stature as a three-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro safety who won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He was reportedly receiving interest from at least eight teams at the start of April and now has the chance to possibly join the Saints in a homecoming for the New Orleans native who also played at LSU.
While the Saints did not draft a safety, they have made additions to their secondary this season, signing for Jets safety Marcus Maye to a three-year deal and Chiefs’ defensive back Daniel Sorensen.
Mathieu, nicknamed “The Honey Badger,” has 26 interceptions in nine seasons in the NFL. He is coming off a Pro Bowl season in Kansas City, totaling 76 tackles, a sack, three interceptions (including one returned for a TD), six passes defensed and three fumble recoveries.
