We know the NFL can take a physical toll on players, but what about coaches? Working long hours for months at a time isn’t exactly conducive to a healthy lifestyle with many coaches struggling to find work-life balance. Obsessive in his attention to detail, Rams coach Sean McVay has long burned the candle at both ends, with his pursuit of greatness coming at the expense of those close to him.

“I'm going to be married this summer. I want to have a family,” McVay expressed to ESPN last week. “I have always had a dream about being able to be a father, and I can't predict the future, you know?" In that same interview, McVay acknowledged he “won’t make it” coaching to 60 with his current workload.

McVay’s hard work has arguably paid off—he became the youngest coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with Sunday’s win over Cincinnati—but at what cost? We’ve seen presidents age before our eyes (look at Barack Obama’s hair color at the end of his presidency compared to when he first took office) and coaches have been known to experience similar fatigue, wearing their exhaustion on their face with graying hair and baggy eyelids. Winning the Super Bowl has afforded McVay a rare chance to smell the roses, sleeping in without fear of his alarm going off at its usual ungodly hour.

When asked if he’d be back with the Rams next season, the 36-year-old offered a noncommittal, “We’ll see.” “I’m just enjoying this moment right now,” McVay told Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. “I’m really happy to be a part of this.”

Rams COO Kevin Demoff agreed McVay’s pace is “unsustainable,” but remains confident he’ll be back to help Los Angeles defend its title in 2022. “A month away, two months away from everybody and I think things will feel a lot better.”
