Odell Beckham Jr. quickly became a superstar after the New York Giants drafted him with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Despite missing the first four games of the season, he broke several rookie records with 91 catches for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns.
OBJ is the fastest receiver in NFL history to reach 100, 150, and 200 career receptions, along with the fastest to record 3,000 and 3,500 receiving yards. The list goes on and on.
The star receiver spent five seasons with the Giants before being traded to Cleveland. He spent two-and-a-half seasons there before the Rams traded for him last year. Of course, he went on to win the Super Bowl with Los Angeles.
Now, OBJ is a free agent and could be looking to sign with a contender soon. The Giants are 4-1 and the wide receiver recently visited their facilities, sparking rumors of a reunion.
Two-time Super Bowl champion Osi Umenyiora joined the Audacy Original Podcast "The Crew" and revealed he's all for the Giants bringing OBJ back.
“100%. I’m one of the guys who believes he never should have left,” Umenyiora said (10:10 in player above). “I mean OBJ in New York, come on man. Let’s talk about OBJ in New York. Just everything about him works in New York. Unfortunately, he’s had a couple of injuries but we saw what he was able to do with the Los Angeles Rams last year and you need a guy like that on your football team. The guy who traded him away isn’t there anymore. I’m all for bringing OBJ back. He’s a great guy.”
That “guy” who traded away OBJ is Dave Gettleman, who retired after last season. He clashed with the star receiver, so perhaps a return to the Giants is more possible now.
Beckham Jr. is not only a star on the field but perhaps a bigger star off of it. His one-handed catch donned the cover of “Madden 16” and that’s only scratching the surface.
“I feel you on that but I felt like LA and OBJ was a match made in heaven,” Fred Smoot said. “As much as he’s New York … He was the first true rockstar of the digital age when it came to the NFL. This dude can go to Paris. This dude can go anywhere. He’s a rockstar, and LA and rockstars just go together.”
There are plenty of athletes trying to make a name for themselves with different personal brands and whatnot, but OBJ did that before it was cool.
“I agree with you. We had never really seen anything quite like that before,” Umenyiora said. “He was a global, everywhere in the world is Tom Brady, Odell Beckham Jr., that’s the only two they know.”
New York is 4-1 and a reunion could be in the cards if the Giants keep up their surprising start.
