Beginning in 2023, Major League Baseball teams are allowed to sell sponsorship patches on their uniforms.
The patches -- as noted by Maury Brown of Forbes -- will be 4-by-4 inches and "can be placed on either the right or left sleeve." As Paul Lukas of Uni Watch pointed out, it won't be as simple as each team deciding whether to place the ad patch on the right or left sleeve. Right-handed pitchers and hitters will have the sponsorship patch on the left sleeve, and left-handed pitchers and hitters will have the patch on their right sleeve.
While many more teams figure to introduce ad patches in the future, here's a look at the clubs who have already reached agreements to use their uniforms as another place to generate revenue:
Arizona Diamondbacks - Avnet
Joe Mantiply and the Diamondbacks will have a uniform sponsor in 2023.(Chris Coduto/Getty Images)In February of 2023, the Diamondbacks announced a uniform ad partnership with Avnet. Based out of Phoenix, Avnet brands itself as "a global technology distributor and solutions provider."
Boston Red Sox - MassMutual
The Boston Red Sox will have a uniform sponsor in 2023.(Elsa/Getty Images)In November of 2022, the Red Sox and MassMutual announced a partnership. MassMutual is the third largest life insurance company in the United States.
Cincinnati Reds - Kroger
Curt Casali models the Reds sponsorship patch.(Steph Chambers/Getty Images)In February of 2023, the Reds announced Kroger as their uniform sponsor. Kroger is the fourth largest grocer in the United States, trailing only Walmart, Amazon and Costco.
Houston Astros - Oxy
Alex Bregman models the Astros uniform sponsorship.(Rob Carr/Getty Images)In February of 2023, the Astros revealed that they had signed a seven-year deal with Oxy to make them their uniform sponsor. Oxy is short for Occidental Petroleum, and is located in Houston.
Los Angeles Angels - FBM
Shohei Ohtani models the Angels sponsorship patch.(Carmen Mandato/Getty Images)In February of 2023, the Angels announced that they had signed a three-year deal to make FBM their jersey sponsor. FBM stands for Foundation Building Material.
San Diego Padres - Motorola
Ha-Seong Kim models the new ad patch on the Padres uniforms.(Christian Petersen/Getty Images)The Padres were the first team to unveil a uniform sponsor, announcing a deal with Motorola way back in April of 2022. As you can see in the image of Ha-Seong Kim above, the Friar patch will be moved to right sleeve for right-handed hitters and pitchers so that the Motorola ad can see the most eyeballs possible.
