Russell Wilson wants to start for Pittsburgh in Week 1 but calf injury still lingering

Russell Wilson is hoping to start on Sunday in the Steelers’ season opener against the Falcons in Atlanta, but adds he needs to be “smart” about it.

Talking to reporters, Wilson said he was limited during practice on Friday as he continues to deal with calf tightness.

“I didn’t do much, only a couple things,” said Wilson about practice on Friday.

When asked if he was starting on Sunday, Wilson told reporters, “I’m doing everything I can” and is trying to get his body ready.

It’s the same calf that Wilson injured at the beginning of Training Camp when he was doing conditioning work with a push/pull sled.

While Wilson said he hopes to play on Sunday, he didn’t sound like a player that was confident he’ll get to start.

With the Steelers being overly cautious with Wilson in the preseason, the team could start Justin Fields and dress Wilson as the backup.

Not knowing if he’ll start or not on Sunday, Fields told reports he has always prepared as if he’s the starter since he was a rookie.
