Memphis came into Friday's 2023 AutoZone Liberty Bowl game as heavy underdogs (-10.5) and left with a momentum swinging victory over P5 Iowa State 36-26 in front of 48,789 attending the cold winter classic. 92.9 FM ESPN aired the entire game and play-by-play action live from Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

The win over Iowa State capped a 10-win season for Memphis (10-3) in which the Tigers played well but couldn't get past signature opponents like SMU, Tulane and Missouri. That changed with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl win as the Tigers remain in the cupcake American Athletic Conference (AAC) that will lose SMU to the Atlantic Coast Conference, gaining Army, while programs like Tulane likely decline in 2024.

Memphis showed well and is positioned to dominate in 2024 in the AAC. The win will also likely mean a revised contract for Coach Ryan Silverfield.
