J&J Show: Mike Norvell removed at Florida State

Former Memphis coach Mike Norvell is out at Florida State. FSU fired Norvell Sunday, Nov. 1, following a 36–24 loss to Clemson that dropped the Seminoles to 3–5. He finishes his Florida State tenure with a 41–39 record.

Jason and John discussed Norvell and college football on Monday's (11/2) 92.9 FM ESPN J&J with Yahoo!'s Dan Wolken. AUDIO:

His Memphis legacy includes a championship breakthrough. Norvell coached the Tigers from 2016–2019, taking Memphis to three consecutive conference championship games and winning the American title in 2019 before leaving for Tallahassee.

Memphis also delivered one of his most memorable Florida State losses. The Tigers beat their former coach’s Seminoles 20–12 in Tallahassee on Sept. 14, 2024, part of an eventual 2–10 FSU season.

The fall came quickly after a championship season. Norvell led FSU to the 2023 ACC title and a 13–0 record before its controversial College Football Playoff exclusion. The Seminoles went 10–22 from the start of 2024 through his firing.

Moving on carries an enormous price tag. The Associated Press reports Norvell’s buyout at roughly $47 million, with assistant-coach obligations pushing the overall cost beyond $50 million.

Another Tennessee connection takes over: Former Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill is FSU’s interim coach while the university conducts a national search.
