Jason & John interviewed Alabama State Head Men's Basketball Coach Tony Madlock about his team moving on to the NCAA Tournament after winning the SWAC Tournament this past week. Madlock, the successful former Tiger, coach on Penny's staff, and Ole Miss Coach, shared his thoughts about all the players from the Memphis area on his current team and talked about Penny & the Tigers going to the NCAA Tournament.
(AUDIO):
Tony Madlock, head coach of the Alabama State Hornets, led his team to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship on March 15, 2025, securing their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011. The fifth-seeded Hornets upset Jackson State in the SWAC final, with key contributions from Madlock’s son, TJ, and Memphis native Amarr Knox.
This victory marked a significant milestone in Madlock’s third season at Alabama State, showcasing his ability to turn around programs, a skill honed during his lone year at South Carolina State, where he improved a one-win team to a 15-16 record. A Memphis native, Madlock’s deep ties to the University of Memphis include playing under Larry Finch from 1988 to 1992, where he helped reach the Elite Eight, and later serving as an assistant coach under Penny Hardaway from 2018 to 2021, reinforcing his basketball legacy.
