Brendan Sorsby’s long-running NCAA eligibility battle took another dramatic turn Monday. Just days after the NCAA denied Texas Tech’s appeal to restore the quarterback’s eligibility, a Texas judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction that allows him to play during the 2026 season. Jason Smith broke the news on 92.9 FM ESPN and discussed it on the J&J Show on Monday (6/8/).

Sorsby, a former quarterback at University of Cincinnati who transferred to Texas Tech University, had been ruled ineligible after admitting to gambling on college sports, including games involving his former team at Indiana University Bloomington. The NCAA twice denied reinstatement requests, maintaining that its gambling policies warranted the penalty.

Judge Ken Curry’s ruling temporarily restores Sorsby’s eligibility, though he must serve a two-game suspension and continue counseling related to gambling addiction treatment. The NCAA could still appeal, meaning the legal fight is far from over. For now, however, one of college football’s most controversial offseason stories ends with Sorsby back on the field and Texas Tech’s quarterback plans back on track.

Live coverage of the Sorsby case and more college football live on 92.9 FM ESPN, Memphis' Sports Station.
