You could take the approach that Carson Wentz brought his demise in Philadelphia upon himself with less-than-stellar play over the past few seasons, capped off by almost inarguably bottom-tier production throughout 2020 which ultimately led to his benching and a trade. But you could also view it as a string of bad luck for Wentz that led to that poor play. After all, you're not dealt the best hand in the world if you tear your ACL at age 25, are surrounded by a ragtag group of receivers, play behind an injury-ravaged offensive line, and deal with one of the most passionate (and difficult) fan bases in the country.
Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons, someone who's dealt with his fair share of heat from the Philly sports community, is taking the latter approach. He shared his thoughts on Wentz's departure with his Twitch followers in a "Call of Duty" livestream with teammate Seth Curry. You can watch the whole stream here — head to the 28:43 mark to see his response in the moment — or check out the clip below, courtesy of NBC Sports' John Clark.
Among other notes: 1) Simmons' Twitch name is "SimmoTheSavage25," which is not even close to his best nickname, and 2) he admitted that he played poorly and was turning the ball over too much against the Spurs, despite a nine-assist, three-turnover performance. Don't be so hard on yourself, Ben!
As for his comment on Wentz, it should come as no surprise. Simmons has previously sent Wentz a pair of special shoes and has voiced his excitement for the team over the years.
Both are star athletes who have been heavily scrutinized by fans that both loved and criticized them. And though one of those stories resulted in Wentz getting shipped out of Philly for a pair of draft picks, it looks as though Simmons is here to stay, especially after the whole James Harden drama came to an end.
