Jason Garrett has advice for Mike McCarthy amid uncertain future as Cowboys coach

By , Audacy

Jason Garrett knows the exact position Mike McCarthy is in right now.

McCarthy was the one who replaced Garrett just two years ago, but he’s faced many of the issues that ultimately got his predecessor canned. The roster has plenty of talent and the NFC East has been there for the taking, but postseason meltdowns have only heated up his seat.

And with Sean Payton hitting the market this offseason and speculation ramping up that he could be replacing McCarthy, this is a huge year for the veteran head coach.

Appearing Thursday on the Rich Eisen Show, Garrett offered some advice to McCarthy.

“Well I think the biggest thing for any head coach and really for any player in the NFL," Garrett said, "Is really just focus on yourself and what you need to do to be your best. And I know that’s a cliche, and everyone thinks it’s coachspeak and all that, but it’s so true. And it’s so true certainly in a place like Dallas. There’s a lot of people who make their living speculating about things and digging things up, that’s just the world we live in. …

“And so when you’re in those roles you have to just really focus on what you need to do to be your best. And this was a theme that we tried to use with all of our players through the years. Players getting into Twitter wars and all of this kind of stuff -- it’s like hey let’s just lock in on what we need to do each day to be our best. And when you’re preaching that message to your team sometimes you’ve got to preach it to yourself. ..

“Mike obviously is a fantastic coach, has been for a long time. He understands the importance of doing that and I think they have a really good team. They obviously have a really good head coach and a lot of good players, and they’ve got a chance to be a good team this year.”

The NFC East has seen improvement this offseason, most notably with the additions made by the Philadelphia Eagles. But the Cowboys, again, have the talent to win that division. McCarthy will have to get Dallas to reach its potential if he wants any chance of retaining his job.
