The Cardinals have their man. According to Katie Woo and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Cardinals will introduce bench coach Oliver Marmol as their new manager in a press conference Monday morning at 10 AM CT. He replaces Mike Shildt, who, despite guiding St. Louis to a 17-game winning streak and an NL Wild Card berth, was let go after the season over “philosophical differences.”

A Cardinals lifer, Marmol has been with the organization since 2007, the year he was drafted out of College of Charleston. After spending four years on the farm as a minor-league utility man (Advanced-A was the highest level he reached), Marmol began his coaching career in 2011 as a hitting coach for the Cardinals’ rookie-league team in Jupiter. After stints managing Johnson City (a rookie-league affiliate until last year) and his former team, Advanced-A Palm Beach, Marmol was promoted to the Cardinals’ big-league staff as a first-base coach in 2017. He changed roles in 2019, succeeding Shildt as the Cardinals’ bench coach.
At 35, Marmol becomes the youngest manager in MLB, an honor previously held by Twins skipper Rocco Baldelli (39). His predecessor Shildt may not be on the market long, reportedly landing an interview with the Padres, who ousted manager Jayce Tingler after a frustrating season that saw them finish well off the National League Wild Card pace (11 games back of St. Louis). Marmol is the 65th manager in franchise history and the first Latino to hold that position for the Cardinals since Mike Gonzalez in 1940.
