It's the second time he's won an award of such prestige from NSMA, as he previously won the Illinois sportscaster of the year award. The organization also named Cardinals beat writer from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Derrick Goold as the 2021 Missouri sportswriter of the year.

Rooney has been a member of Cardinals radio for a total of 16 seasons. The Richmond, Mo. native has been in the position since 20016, after 18 years calling Chicago White Sox games.

He was previously working around Cardinals baseball in the 1980s as a sports reporter for KMOX and broadcasting Mizzou football and basketball games. He called his first MLB game in 1983 with Mike Shannon and Hall of Fame Broadcaster Jack Buck.
