ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Busch Stadium will have around 14,000 fans back in the stands for the 2021 home opener, but with the limited capacity, an enormous demand is expected for the exclusive tickets.

Director of the Washington University in St. Louis Sports Business Program, Dr. Patrick Rishe says fans should expect the ticket prices on secondary markets like StubHub to be "extremely aggressive." To explain just how big of a demand he's expecting, he compared the Cardinals to the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA – a team that has had four-straight losing seasons and never won a championship.

"They just approved fans in their building and (a friend who works in sports intelligence there) told me that tickets are selling off the shelves," Rishe says. "So what's going to happen here in St. Louis when we have a team that has a great history, great success and now with (Nolan) Arenado on our team?"

At last check, there are less than 40 tickets for sale on StubHub for opening day in St. Louis. The cheapest is at $497.

But if the limited capacity at Busch Stadium is rolled back, then the prices will begin to drop. However, there's no timetable on when that may happen.

"All of us hope that can happen by the end of the season and I think that's possible if everyone is getting their vaccinations and so forth," Rishe says.

The Cardinals say they will soon announce when tickets for all home games in April will go on sale. Season ticket holders will have first access to purchase tickets, then any leftover seats will go on sale at a later date, the team says.
