ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Cardinals offensive struggles have been the talk of the first month of the 2024 season, with the the team posting one of the five worst offenses in the MLB to start the season, and third worst in the National League.

One of the causes of the struggles so far is the slumps by two stars hitters to begin the season, with Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Gorman both generating a weights run created plus (wRC+) of 63 and 72 respectively, both well of the league average of 100.

On Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks however, both showed some potential in getting their groove back, with Goldschmidt going two for four, including hitting the game tying home run in the seventh inning against his former team, while Gorman came off the bench to hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Diamondbacks and end their four-game skid.

John Rooney, the Voice of the Cardinals, says the home run by Gorman was needed for the whole team amid their early season struggles.

"The whole team needed that," said Rooney. "It was a time where hits have been so hard to put together. They just let runner after runner on the base and couldn't break through in the Milwaukee series. These guys can hit, but they happen to go south at the same time, now let's see if they can string something together off this great moment."

Rooney credits Lance Lynn and the pitching for being able to keep the game in arms reach, with Lynn only allowing three runs and the Cardinals bullpen shutting out the D-Backs for the final four innings.

"Lance Lynn could've given up a whole lot more than three runs, but he kept his team in the game," said Rooney. " And then the bullpen did the rest and afforded the Cardinals to come back."

The Cardinals continue their series Tuesday at Busch Stadium against the Diamondbacks with Steven Matz making his second start at Busch Stadium this season, while the D-Backs will throw out Tommy Henry on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. which you can listen to the game right here on KMOX
