(KMOX) - Overall, Thursday wasn't a typical start for St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright. But, still, Thursday was special as he joined the 2,000 strikeout club.
It happened in the bottom of the fourth inning vs Luis Urias of the Milwaukee Brewers. Wainwright did it, fittingly, with his classic Uncle Charlie on a 2-2 count.
He and Bob Gibson are the only pitchers with 2,000 career strikeouts in Cardinals history. Gibson is 14th on MLB's all-time strikeout list with 3,117 Ks.
Wainwright is the 85th pitcher in baseball history with 2,000 strikeouts.
Wainwright's current teammate, Jon Lester, is also in the club with 2,478, and a number of pitchers who have spent time with the Cardinals are also in the club, including Dennis Eckersley, John Lackey, Dan Haren and Andy Benes.
St. Louis was down 5-0 at the end of the fourth inning, as Wainwright gave up a grand slam and a solo home run to Brewers right fielder Tyrone Taylor. But his team stormed back and scored seven unanswered runs to take a lead in the 8th inning.
