Super Bowl winning NFL Coach Mike Holmgren joined Dukes and Bell on Radio Row at Super Bowl 53. Holmgren on what happened with the Falcons in Super Bowl LI, “ I’m doing the game and when Julio Jones makes that catch I said that game is over, they didn’t run the ball and the rest happens. That’s a rule, I believe that’s his rule and the head coach has a button he can overrule the play call, and I truly if he would have done that you win the Super Bowl.”
Holmgren on how much he would get involved on the defensive side of the ball, “I didn’t mess with the defense, the only time I would ever hit the button is if I thought they should go after them more.” Holmgren continued, “But one of the things I did as a head coach was clock management. I’m not a fan of the clock management coaches because that’s my job, my job is to do coach management, now I did hire a replay coach because my percentage was awful.”
Holmgren on the quarterbacks he got a chance to coach, “I got a young quarterback named Brett Favre and I’m doing the same drills with him that I did with Montana and it wasn’t working.” Holmgren continued, “I was lucky that I realized it and changed things up and that’ when you know you have a good relationship between the coach and quarterback when you can change things like that and it works.”
