NFL insider: Falcons could draft former Tide, Sooners QB Hurts

Are the Falcons looking for insurance at the quarterback position in the draft?

Longtime NFL columnist Peter King of Pro Football Talk says the Falcons could take Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, formerly of Alabama, in the second round of his latest mock -- this coming a week after reports surfaced that the Falcons were "strangely interested" in quarterbacks during their pre-draft scouting.

The Falcons have the 15th pick in the second round, 47th overall. Hurts doesn't boast the raw talent of the top two quarterbacks in this class -- he was famously supplanted as starter at Alabama by Tua Tagovailoa -- but he has a great feel for the game and is dangerous with the ball in his hands. There's a sense he might be the most pro-ready quarterback in this class, with a good chance to stick around as a backup and maybe more.

Meanwhile, there's nothing to suggest the Falcons will move away from Matt Ryan anytime soon, and he's showed no signs of slowing down.

But the veteran is now 35, and injury or decline could set in at any time. With the Falcons coming off a miserable season and seemingly lightyears away from the Super Bowl-contending teams of recent vintage, it's not totally shocking to start seeing whispers about the future.

King also identified the Baltimore Ravens as a potential fit for Hurts.
