Carolina Panthers beat writer for The Athletic in Charlotte Joseph Person joined Carl Dukes and Mike Bell to break down the Panthers 2019 NFL Draft picks.
Person on Cam Newton’s availability this year, “He is in doing all of the workouts and appears to be in great shape. Count me as one of the people who wants to see it on the field after two surgeries. They got an insurance policy in Will Grier from West Virginia in the third round.”
Person continued on the Panthers picking Will Grier, “The Panthers view was that Cam knew this was a possibility. They did wait until late in the third round to draft a quarterback so it wasn’t like picking Daniel Jones or someone like that earlier. Grier is from Charlotte and is known locally. The Panthers are at their best when Cam is at his best and when he is healthy.”
Person on the Panthers’ defense, “Ron Rivera is tweaking this defense and wants to give teams multiple looks. They want Burns (16th overall pick Brian Burns) to come off the edge and wreak havoc.”
Person on Panthers Owner David Tepper, “He has been a breath of fresh air for this organization. He is calling a former player, who I think is Steve Smith, to join the ring of honor. The announcement will come on Monday.”
Person on the Panthers as a whole, “This team starts and ends with the health of Cam Newton.”
