The NCAA Owes Atlanta Another Final Four

NBA Game cancelled
© Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

The NCAA made the decision on Thursday to cancel the Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments due to Coronavirus, and that decision is one that hits Atlanta pretty hard.

The Final Four was scheduled to be held in Atlanta on April 4th and 6th and now Atlanta will no longer receive the benefits of hosting such a major event.

Local restaurants, hotels, car rentals, taxi drivers, entertainers, venue, parking garages, and other vendors who have been preparing years for the influx of fans will now all take major financial hits.

The Men’s Final Four is already attached to cities through 2026, so the next available Final Four would be in 2027.

Future NCAA Men's Final Four Sites:

  • Indianapolis in 2021
  • New Orleans in 2022
  • Houston in 2023
  • Phoenix in 2024
  • San Antonio in 2025
  • Indianapolis in 2026

For further compensation the NCAA should ALSO give Atlanta a Women’s Final Four without having to bid on it.

If we follow the same model as the Men's Final Four, then New Orleans, who was scheduled to have the Women's tournament this year, should be awarded the next available one in 2025.

After that, Atlanta should be given the Women's Final Four in 2026, it would be a great trial run for the Men's Tourney in 2027 if both are awarded.

To go even further to contribute to the mess the cancellation this year has cause, they should grant Atlanta sites for Regionals (Sweet 16 and Elite 8) in multiple years in the future.

How far do you feel the NCAA should go to make amends for the nightmare of this years cancelled tournament?
