Will UGA spring game show off improved pass rush?

While only two teams across the country (Iowa and Georgia Southern only gave up 30 long plays from scrimmage) allowed fewer plays of 20 yards or more last season, there was a negative affect to UGA's to-notch skill at stopping opponents from churning huge chunks of yards in one play (32 plays allowed).

The Georgia Bulldogs had trouble sacking opposing quarterbacks last year.

Georgia ranked 12th in 2018 with only 24 sacks. The only teams that were worse at pulling down the opposing quarterback were Ole Miss (22) and Vanderbilt (22) and every SEC team chased Alabama, who registered 45 sacks.

Dennis Dodd, college football analyst for CBS Sports, joined John Fricke and Hugh Douglas on The Morning Show Tuesday and talked about G-Day in Athens this weekend.

Fricke asked Dodd if the Dawgs were going to be able to show off their new pass-rush toys in Nolan Smith, the top outside linebacker recruit from the Class of 2019, and Jermaine Johnson, last year's top junior-college transfer.

“I think there is a lot to be gleaned from interior line play because the referee isn't blowing the whistle if you get close to a guy," Dodd, who doesn't think many things can be gleaned from spring games, said. "That’s what coaches want to see; they want to see that Oklahoma drill [on a> large [scale>. I think you can and I think that [UGA's expanded and improved pass rush> will be featured. ... Some of that line play is going to be worth watching.”
