Was last month’s NFC Championship Game between the Rams and 49ers Troy Aikman’s Fox finale? Many have come to that conclusion, with reports suggesting the former Cowboy could be headed to Amazon along with veteran play-by-play man Al Michaels next season.

Aikman, who has one year remaining on his deal with Fox, is believed to be seeking “Tony Romo money,” an ambitious ask given his current $7.5-million salary (CBS pays Romo $18 million annually). Speaking with Jim Rome on Radio Row in Los Angeles, Aikman admitted he isn’t sure what his future holds at Fox, though the 55-year-old anticipates having more clarity on the matter in the weeks to come.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time with Fox and I’m hopeful that continues. I’ve loved working with Joe [Buck],” Aikman told Rome Thursday. “We’re at a bit of an impasse and how that shakes out, I honestly don’t know.”

A three-time Super Bowl champion and first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, Aikman began his announcing career with Fox in 2001. He’s been paired with Buck since 2002, calling six Super Bowls over that span. “I think it’s going to come to a resolution here within the next week or two,” said Aikman. “But in no way am I a ‘disgruntled employee’ with Fox. I’ve enjoyed my time. It’s just business.”

It’s unclear who would replace Aikman in the Fox broadcast booth, though former Saints coach Sean Payton is thought to be a possibility. As for in-house candidates, Greg Olsen, who drew rave reviews for his work with Kevin Burkhardt this season, would arguably make the most sense.
