Is Matt Olson's leadership style right for Braves clubhouse?

Oakland A’s beat writer for the San Francisco Chronicle Matthew Kawahara joined Dukes & Bell to help preview the A’s who open a two game series with the Braves tonight and Kawahara talked about what kind of leader Matt Olson is.

When asked what kind of leader Olson is.

“He’s a quieter guy, he’s not gonna be sorta the vocal rah-rah, he’s more of a lead by example,” Kawahara said. “Right after the trade, obviously that all happened pretty quickly, we only talked to him once after it went down the way that he put it was he knew he was stepping into big shoes, the idea that he was going to be the successor to Freddie Freeman his approach was not gonna be to come in and be Freddie Freeman he was going to be himself, as you put it he is a quieter guy.”

Kawahara talked about who Olson might have gotten his leadership style from.

“I don’t know if different club houses respond or react to that differently, I think it worked in Oakland. They’ve had a history of guys who were maybe more clubhouse leaders that weren’t necessarily super expressive or vocal. Marcus Semien is a guy who comes to mind he was universally respected in that clubhouse, he’s a guy that mostly kept his head down and worked. I think maybe Olson coming a couple of years after him maybe that’s a role model that he looked up to and maybe that’s kinda the way he goes about it as well.”
