On May 31st, 2022 WFAN and SNY host and personality Sal Licata infamously declared that “The NL East is over!”, when the Mets had a 10.5 game lead over the Braves in the division and we all know how that ended. Well, just like it tends to do, history has repeated itself, but this time the early declaration has come from a Philadelphia radio host, and The Morning Shift reacted to it earlier today.
“If you think about it,right, the Braves came in here and they won the first two games of the season, right, opening day and then that Saturday afternoon when Nola pitched, so since then the Phillies have been 10 games better than the Braves for the better part of two months. This thing hasn’t been close, and I understand the date, I get what I’m about to say, but this division is over, it’s over, the Phillies have won the National League East.” Midday Show host on Sports Radio 94WIP Joe Giglio said.
Mike and Beau both disagree with Joe’s sentiment obviously but they do also wonder if he’s playing radio a little bit as well.
“I don’t know if you just wanted to do what Sal [Licata] did but say this time it’s going to land, but it ain’t gonna happen. Now you just wrote the own obituary for the 2024 Philadelphia Phillies.” Beau Morgan said.
Mike Johnson straight up just said “It sounds to me like he’s playing radio” because of the fact that whether he’s right or wrong the clip will go viral.
Whether or not Joe is trying to go viral or he actually believes what he’s saying, if and when the Braves players hear this you would think and hope as a Braves fan that another radio host prematurely declaring the NL East to be over will be exactly what the Braves need to give them that little bit of extra motivation to take them to the next level.
At the end of the day Sal Licata wasn’t the main reason the Mets didn’t win the NL East in 2022 and Joe Giglio won’t be the main reason the Phillies lose the NL East this year if history does repeat itself, but it never helps to poke the bear, and that’s what both guys did, Joe just better hope he’s right.
